A one-year study programme, targeted for Sarjana or bachelor’s degree holders who aspire to be a teacher or in-service teachers, was successfully launched by SF TI on Saturday, May 31, 2008. The programme, titled Teacher Education Programme (TEP), also offers scholarships for motivated and highly qualified individuals. The launch was attended by more than 80 people, which comprised of teachers from around Jakarta area, interested non-teacher participants, and journalists, who interactively participated in the programme explanation lead by Riris Lumban Tobing, Head of TEP. In conjunction with the programme, Director of SF TI, Kenneth J. Cock, delivered a presentation titled, “Becoming a Teacher”, while Eileen Rachman, human resource consultant, Director of EXPERD, presented “Building Professionalism in Teaching Career”.

In her presentation about the programme, Tobing explained, “This year, we offer scholarships for 20 motivated individuals, who are interested in joining the TEP.” The scholarship is awarded as a tuition waiver, equal with the amount of IDR 16 million. Sarjana degree holders who have education background related with English, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and ICT, or who have teaching experience in mentioned subjects are invited to submit their applications during the scholarship admission period, which will end on June 25, 2008.

The presentation also explained about the academic calendar and the curriculum of the programme, which was developed in collaboration with National Institute of Education, Singapore, and Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. The graduates of the programme, which will be delivered in English and Indonesian, are expected to be able to teach in national plus schools or international schools where ability in teaching in English is mandatory.

There will also be a chance to expand teaching skills for student teachers participated in the programme. “One of the key components in the programme is the Teaching Practice. During this period, you can freely experiment on the teaching methodology you learned in the programme. For in-service teachers, you can even use your current class as your ‘lab’,” explained Tobing further. The Teaching Practice will take place for eight weeks, and will be supervised systematically and advised by experienced observers.
