Digital Learning in the New World: A New Perspective in Utilizing the Power of Technology to Enhance Learning Processes

(SD, SMP and SMA Teachers)

Seminar (February 19, 2009)

09.00 - 12.00

"The Gap Between Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants"

Seminar Background

Our modern world is made up of digital immigrants and digital natives.  Digital immigrants are adults who are just coming to terms with the new digital landscape and the changing face of communication. Digital natives were born into this brave new world; they understand instinctively how it is supposed to work. For the first time in human history, the younger generation - the digital natives - has a greater knowledge and understanding of a key aspect of education than the older generation who are supposed to be instructing them. Interactive website (web 2.0) has turned the world as we know it upside down and schools that fail to realize this risk letting down their students and being left behind.

In order to achieve the effective teaching and learning, teachers must recognize their students as well as their learning styles. Hence, we realize that it is imperative to bring the technology, especially web 2.0 or into learning processes. Through this seminar, the participants will explore as well as develop digital world components to enhance learning experiences.

Objectives

•    To recognize the way we learn, work, think and play
•    To identify components of digital citizenship to prepare teachers, as digital immigrants, in

     facilitating students, as digital natives
•    To explore web 2.0 technology relating to classroom learning processes
•    To identify the challenges that digital immigrants face.

Benefit for Participants

1. Provide components of digital citizenship to face digital world

2. Provides participants with an insight into the differences between the world's of today's digital generation and our own generation of knowledge

     and play

Workshop (20-21 February 2009)

09.00 - 16.00

"How to Develop Digital Citizenship

and

How to Utilize Web 2.0 in Learning Processes"

Workshop Background

Technology is only a tool. In learning process, the sophisticated tools don not automatically promote effective teaching unless the teachers can utilize the technology effectively. Effective technology utilization requires not only the skill to operate the technology, but also the innovative perspective and creativity from the teachers.

Hence even though the technology of interactive website (web 2.0) has been widely introduced, the utilization in learning process (from planning to evaluation) is still uncommon in Indonesian schools. Through these workshops, teachers will not only be able to implement the digital learning but also to be good digital citizens.

Objectives

•    To develop beliefs and values of digital citizenship
•    To develop teachers’ skill to use various web 2.0 tools for learning purposes

Benefit for Participants

1. The skills to develop characteristics of good digital citizenship

2. Ability to prepare real-life examples of how web 2.0 can be integrated to the new technologies into the classroom
