Course Description
As teachers are the key personnel in nurturing and promoting social and emotional learning competencies, they need to be metacognitively conscious of their own strengths, weaknesses, skills and dispositions in order to be more effective, reflective thinkers and learners who are flexible, resilient, adaptive and self-regulated to keep up with the constant changes in time. In this module, besides developing their own metacognitive awareness of themselves, they are to empower their students as well with metacognitive and self-regulated abilities. As such, this module will provide teachers with the ability to develop thinking skills in nurturing the five core social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies of self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship management and responsible decision making.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to
• use the relevant metacognitive tools to be consciously aware of their strengths and weaknesses; • monitor their strategy use for metacognition and self-regulation;
• evaluate and regulate various strategies to promote flexibility of thought,
• create a thoughtful social-emotional classroom climate for enhancing flexibility of thought, self-
regulation, critical and creative thinking;
• select and apply creative thinking and critical Socratic reasoning in their respective thinking and
learning tasks;
• develop opportunities to infuse thinking and self-regulated learning strategies in exercising
decision-making;
• develop activities to assess thinking and self-regulation in the five core SEL competencies.
