Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute (SF TI) will hold two-day seminar and workshops titled, “Nurturing Our Young People: The Issues Facing Families and Schools,” on May 6 and 7, 2008, in Jakarta. Invited to be facilitators of the programme are two international professors from the United States, co-authors of textbook “Teaching Students with Mild and Moderate Disabilities: Research-Based Practices” and experts in childhood and special education: Prof. Dr. Libby Cohen, Professor Emerita of the University of Southern Maine and Prof. Dr. Loraine Spenciner, professor of Early Childhood Special Education at University of Maine at Farmington.
The programme will be divided into two days. On the first day, a joint seminar titled “Nurturing our Youth”
will be conducted by the two facilitators. The seminar will be
presented as an interactive discussion on key issues and demonstration
of practical approaches for teaching and educating young people, and
will host 100 educators as participants. The seminar will be held at
Yustinus Building of Atma Jaya University, South Jakarta.
On the next day, two workshops for 30 participants each will be
held parallel at SF TI campus, Sampoerna Strategic Square, South
Jakarta. In one of the two sessions, Prof. Cohen will lead a session
titled, “Partnering with Educators, Professionals and Families to Support Early Childhood Learning.”
Active participation is expected, since the workshop is designed to be
a hands-on interactive and participant centred session and will explore
collaboration effort between educators, professionals, and families,
and the skills needed to foster and maintain early childhood learning,
especially children at age 3-8 years.
In the other workshop parallel to Prof. Cohen's workshop, Prof. Spenciner will present
a dynamically interactive and participant centred session, which will
discuss the practical approaches and strategies to develop inclusive
education practices for school-age (7-18 years) learners. This
workshop, titled “Teaching and Learning in an Inclusive Educational Environment,”
will discuss topics, that include differentiated instruction,
cooperative learning, assessment of learning, and planning for
instruction.
