February 2008 was an active period for the Master Teacher (MT) Programme,
which is developed by SF TI in collaboration with education offices in
Bangka-Belitung, Bali, and DKI Jakarta and the School of Education from Edith
Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia. The premise of this Master Teacher
Programme is to develop 18 master teachers and 6 master school leaders who,
after the programme, will share their knowledge with a greater number of
teachers creating a cascading effect, allowing more teachers to be better
equipped in educating their students.
Master Teacher Program Phase II District Bali
SF TI sent a team that comprised of SF TI facilitator Desiree and facilitator
from the Edith Cowan University Lynette Moss to conduct Master Teacher Programme
Phase II in Bali started on February 12, 2008. The four-day programme took place
at SMAN 4 Denpasar and SMP Tunas Daud Denpasar and was attended by five teachers
and two leaders. The topics covered including action research projects,
leadership experience, peer coaching, and most importantly about the preparation
for the next phase.
Master Teacher Program Phase II District DKI Jakarta
Parallel with the
program in Bali, the second phase of Master Teacher Program in DKI Jakarta took
place for four days starting on February 12, 2008. Maria Northcote of ECU and
Markus Mardianto of SF TI co-facilitated the programme held at SMPN 115 and SMAN
71. The program, participated by six master teachers and two leaders included
observation of classes lead by Master Teacher participants, dissemination of
results from previous phase to 50 teachers and 10 principals, and a presentation
by Maria about the initial steps of how to plan class action research (CAR), its
implementation and planning for the next phase.

Master Teacher Program Phase II District Bangka Belitung
In district
Bangka Belitung, Master Teacher Programme Phase II was facilitated by Lynette
Moss from the ECU and Jalu Noor Cahyanto representing the SF TI and took four
days to complete. Two high schools, namely SMAN 1 Pemali and SMAN 1 Pangkal
Pinang were chosen to be the venue for the programme, and six master teachers
and two leaders participated again in the programme. The activities that were
done in the programme include observations of music, physics and PKn classes led
by the master teachers, discussions on the results, and on the last two days,
the delivery of action research and presentation of participants’ research
project plans.
