Every two weeks, SFTI has a program for teachers and principals called “Teachers Principals Sharing Network (TPSN)”. This program is held on Friday afternoon from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Last Friday (August 31, 2007), SFTI held the program which discussed about teaching values for children. This issue becomes more and more important in education world nowadays since there is a degradation of values on students. Teachers are required to teach values to their students throughout learning process.
There were about 35 teachers from different schools. The program was mainly for K-6 teachers. Yet there were some who teach grades 7-12 attended the discussion.
The moderator, Ibu Desiree, began the discussion by asking each participant to tell their name along with positive and negative values that start with their first letter. She first set an example of herself. She said: “My name’s Desiree and I hope I can be a Derwawan (generous) but not a Dengki (envious) person”. This warmer activity was a good example of how to teach values to students/children.
Participants were enthusiastic and willing to take part on the discussion. They agreed that teaching values is not only taught in a specific subject but it has to be done and implemented through all subjects at school. At the end of the discussion, ibu Desiree read a story she wrote herself about value. Then she asked all the participants to write a story about values that happened in their real life. She promised them that she would compile all the stories into a ”chicken soup” book.
